Messi scored twice as the reigning world champions defeated Venezuela 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday. And after the match, the 38-year-old cast doubt on his participation at next summer's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico in an emotional Instagram post, writing "only God knows" what the future holds.

Now, ex-Manchester United and England star Beckham, who co-owns MLS side Inter Miami – whom Messi plays his club football for – has added to the discussion surrounding the former Barcelona man's future in a social media post of his own.

Writing on Instagram, Beckham said: "A special night for a special person… Everything has been achieved but he still wants more, not for himself but for his country… Last night Argentina celebrated Leo in the way he truly deserves… felicitaciones leo."
